The French aerospace and defense company Thales announced it will take a financial hit in the first half of the year after Germany pulled the plug on a major naval procurement program. Berlin has decided to scrap the project for the F126 frigates, a move that directly impacts Thales's order book and forces the company to record a significant charge.
Thales, which supplies electronic systems and sensors for warships, had been a key subcontractor in the German frigate program. The cancellation means the company must now write off investments and costs already incurred during the early stages of the project. While Thales did not specify the exact amount of the charge, analysts expect it to run into the tens of millions of euros.
The decision by Germany to abandon the F126 program comes amid shifting defense priorities and budget constraints within the Bundeswehr. The frigates were intended to replace aging vessels and strengthen the navy's capabilities in the North and Baltic Seas. However, delays and rising costs reportedly led Berlin to reconsider the entire procurement.
For Thales, the setback adds pressure to its defense division, which has otherwise benefited from increased European military spending since the war in Ukraine. The company is now expected to focus on other naval contracts, including potential work on France's future frigate programs and export deals. Thales will release its full first-half financial results in the coming weeks, where the charge will be detailed.
