Gunflint Trail lodges see boost in winter business after latest snowfall

A welcome series of substantial snowstorms has transformed the landscape of Cook County and the Gunflint Trail, revitalizing the winter tourism season after a slow start. Recent accumulations, exceeding two feet in higher elevations, have restored ideal conditions for the quintessential North Woods activities that define the region.

Lodge owners and outfitters report a significant and immediate surge in business, with phone lines ringing steadily for new reservations and guided trips. The deep, fresh powder has perfectly set the stage for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding, drawing back visitors who had been waiting for adequate snow cover.

“People are really happy,” said Ruth Wagner, owner of Golden Eagle Lodge. “The snow has made all the difference. The trails are in excellent shape, and you can feel the energy. Everyone was hoping for this, and now that it’s here, they’re coming up to enjoy it.”

The dramatic improvement in trail conditions has been a relief for local businesses that depend on a robust winter season. With a stable base now established across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness gateway, the community anticipates strong activity through the remainder of the season, as enthusiasts seize the opportunity to experience the area's famed silent, snow-blanketed forests.
