Mamdani and Knicks owner feud over Madison Square Garden security

A dispute over public safety and private property rights has erupted between New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan. The conflict began after the Knicks abruptly cancelled a planned outdoor watch party for Game 4 of their playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The event, which was set to take place on the plaza outside the arena, was called off by MSG officials citing security concerns. Mayor Adams publicly criticized the decision, suggesting that the cancellation was not about safety but rather a business dispute. He stated that the city had already approved the event and that the NYPD was prepared to provide security.

Dolan fired back, accusing the mayor of trying to score political points. In a statement, he claimed that the city had failed to provide adequate security plans and that MSG was not willing to assume the liability. He argued that the mayor's office had been informed of the cancellation days before the public announcement.

The exchange has highlighted the ongoing tension between the city and one of its most prominent private venues. While the mayor insists the city was ready to support the event, Dolan maintains that the burden of security fell unfairly on the Garden. The watch party was ultimately moved to a nearby bar, but the public spat between the two powerful figures has left many fans frustrated, caught in the middle of a political and logistical standoff.
