Many Residents of This Atlanta Neighborhood Don’t Shop at This Grocery Store—So Why Are They Rallying To Save it?

For years, the Buy Low grocery store on the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue has been more than just a place to buy milk and bread. For the elderly residents of this Atlanta neighborhood, many of whom no longer drive, and for families without a car, it is the only food source within walking distance. So when word spread that the store might close, the reaction was swift and surprising: a rally to save it.

The twist is that many of the people showing up to protest the closure don't actually shop there. They drive to bigger chains across town for better prices and wider selection. But they understand that their neighbors can't do that. The nearest alternative grocery store is more than two miles away, a trek that is impossible for someone with a walker or a parent juggling two kids and a bus transfer.

Organizers say the fight isn't about loyalty to a specific brand. It's about basic access. If the Buy Low shuts down, the neighborhood loses its only source of fresh produce and affordable staples within a safe, reachable distance. The rally, which drew more than a hundred people on a rainy Saturday, was less about the store itself and more about what it represents: a lifeline for the most vulnerable. Residents are now petitioning the property owner and local officials to find a way to keep the doors open, even if that means subsidizing the rent or finding a new operator. They argue that a neighborhood is only as strong as its ability to feed everyone in it.
