A major road construction project along National Avenue is creating headaches for local business owners, who say the loss of parking is driving customers away. The work, a joint effort between the city of Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, has blocked off large sections of street parking for weeks.
Shopkeepers and restaurant owners report a sharp drop in foot traffic. Many regulars are avoiding the area entirely due to the confusion and limited access. One cafe owner said morning sales have dropped by nearly half since the barriers went up. "People see the cones and just keep driving," she said. "They don't realize we are still open."
The project aims to repave the road and upgrade underground utilities. While city officials have promised to keep businesses informed, many feel left in the dark. Some were given only a few days notice before parking was removed. Others say the detour signs are confusing and send potential customers miles out of their way.
Compounding the problem, delivery trucks are struggling to find places to stop. Several store owners have had to unload shipments by hand from blocks away. A few have resorted to paying for private lots just to keep their doors open.
City representatives say the disruptions are temporary and necessary for long-term safety improvements. But for small businesses already recovering from the pandemic, every lost sale matters. Some worry they may not survive until the asphalt dries.
