A wave of public records requests has created tension between New Stanton borough officials and a local business owner. The handwritten filings, submitted under Pennsylvania's Right-to-Know Law, started arriving in January and picked up steam as the year went on. According to documents obtained by the Trib, the borough received seven requests in April and roughly double that number in May.
The business owner behind the requests has not publicly explained the motivation, but the volume has strained the small borough's administrative resources. Officials say each request requires time to locate, review, and redact documents, pulling staff away from other duties. The borough has pushed back, arguing that some requests are overly broad or seek information already available.
The clash highlights a growing challenge for municipalities with limited staff. While the Right-to-Know Law is designed to ensure government transparency, frequent or voluminous requests can overwhelm small offices. New Stanton's solicitor has been involved in reviewing the filings, and the borough has denied some requests, citing exemptions under the law. The business owner has not indicated whether he plans to appeal those denials. For now, the back-and-forth continues, with no clear resolution in sight.
