For months, the promise of the World Cup brought a wave of optimism to Kansas City's small business owners. Signs went up, staff was hired, and inventory was stocked. But as the tournament nears its end, many shopkeepers and restaurateurs report that the expected flood of international visitors never materialized in their neighborhoods. Instead, the crowds largely stayed near the stadium and official fan zones, leaving local boutiques and cafes in quieter districts with a noticeable dip in their usual foot traffic.
"We saw the big numbers on the news," said Maria Torres, who owns a gift shop in the Crossroads Arts District. "But our register didn't feel it. We had a few curious tourists, but mostly we missed our regulars who stayed away because they thought the city would be too crowded." Her experience is echoed by others who say the hype around the games actually hurt their day-to-day business. Some customers avoided downtown altogether, fearing gridlock and parking shortages.
Now, with the final match set for Saturday, business owners are looking ahead. They are planning small welcome-back specials and hoping that once the event wraps up, their loyal local customers will feel comfortable returning. "The World Cup was a great thing for the city's image," Torres added. "But for us, the real win will be when our neighbors walk through the door again."
