State Airfields Receive Funding

State Airfields Receive Funding

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who chairs the Senate Transportation and Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that two dozen municipal airfields across Mississippi will receive just over $20 million in federal grants. The funding comes from the third round of Fiscal Year 2026 Airport Improvement Program grants, approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money is designated for facility improvements that focus on airport safety and resilience. The grants will help local airports upgrade runways, improve lighting systems, and strengthen infrastructure against weather-related damage. Hyde-Smith noted that these investments are critical for rural communities that rely on general aviation for medical flights, disaster response, and business travel.

The 24 airfields selected span the state, from the Delta to the Gulf Coast. Specific projects include repaving aging tarmacs, installing better navigational aids, and reinforcing drainage systems. The FAA evaluates grant applications based on need, safety impact, and how well the project fits long-term airport planning.

Airport managers in smaller towns often struggle to fund major repairs from local budgets alone. This federal injection allows them to address deferred maintenance without raising fees on pilots or tenants. The program also supports jobs in construction and engineering across the state.

Hyde-Smith emphasized that safe, reliable airfields are a lifeline for Mississippi's economy. She pushed for the funding as part of her role overseeing transportation appropriations. The grants represent the latest installment of a multi-year effort to modernize the state's aviation network.
