At a gathering outside a VFW post in West Mifflin, several veterans argued that the games fund building repairs, utility bills, and community events that would otherwise disappear. "We are not asking for a handout," said one post commander. "We are asking for a fair shot to keep our doors open. These machines pay for the heat in the winter."
The call comes as the state House considers a bill that would legalize and tax skill games, bringing them under the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Supporters say regulation would generate millions in new tax revenue and provide consumer protections. Opponents, including casino operators and some lawmakers, claim the games are unregulated gambling that siphon money from licensed casinos.
Local business owners echoed the veterans' concerns. A bar owner in Lawrenceville said the machines account for nearly a third of his monthly income, allowing him to keep five employees on staff. Without them, he said, he would likely have to close.
The bill has bipartisan sponsors, but no vote has been scheduled. Veterans groups plan to keep lobbying Harrisburg until a decision is made.
