Dunedin open container district: Businesses push for outdoor drinking

A group of downtown Dunedin business owners is asking the city to create an open container district that would allow customers to carry alcoholic drinks outside, hoping the change will revive a summer season that has been slower than expected. The proposal, which has been discussed informally for months, would let people buy a drink at one participating bar or restaurant and then walk to another venue within a defined area, similar to programs already running in several Florida cities.

Supporters say the idea is not about encouraging heavy drinking but about making the downtown more walkable and social. Many shops and eateries along the main strip have seen foot traffic drop since the end of spring, and owners believe a relaxed outdoor drinking rule would draw visitors who want to browse, eat, and linger longer. One restaurant manager noted that customers often ask if they can take their wine or beer outside while waiting for a table, and current rules force staff to say no.

The city commission has not scheduled a vote yet, but staff have been asked to study how other towns handle liability, trash, and hours of operation. Some residents have raised concerns about noise and public intoxication, but business leaders argue that similar districts in nearby communities have not caused major problems. A formal proposal could go before the board later this fall, with a possible pilot program next spring if approved.
