'Fresh brisket on the board': Buc-ee's is cooking up big business on its first day in Goodyear

GOODYEAR, AZ - Five hours after the doors swung open, the line for Buc-ee's famous brisket still stretched deep into the store. The Texas-based gas station and convenience store chain celebrated its first day of business in Goodyear on Tuesday, drawing a steady stream of curious customers and loyal fans.

"It's fresh brisket on the board," one employee shouted as a fresh tray was brought out from the smoker, sending a wave of savory smoke through the air. The smell alone was enough to pull people off the highway.

ABC15's Jordan Bontke was inside the massive 53,000-square-foot location to see the operation in full swing. The store, which sits at the intersection of Bullard Avenue and Interstate 10, features 120 fueling positions and a sprawling retail floor packed with snacks, drinks, and Buc-ee's branded merchandise. But the main attraction remains the food counter, where pit crews work nonstop to keep up with demand.

The brisket, sliced thin and piled high on white bread, is the signature item. Customers also lined up for chopped brisket sandwiches, kolaches, and the chain's famous Beaver Nuggets.

For many, the opening was a long time coming. Buc-ee's announced plans for the Goodyear location years ago, and construction delays only built up anticipation. Now that it is open, the store is expected to draw traffic from across the Phoenix metro area and beyond.

The company has not released official sales numbers from the first day, but based on the crowd, the brisket board is not staying full for long.
