Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel took the stage at the 2026 annual meeting and delivered a clear message about the company's future. Speaking to thousands of shareholders in Omaha, Abel emphasized that the conglomerate's success depends on the people running its many subsidiaries.
"We have an exceptional group of leaders and businesses," Abel said during the question-and-answer session. He pointed out that Berkshire's decentralized structure allows each operating manager to focus on long-term value rather than short-term Wall Street demands. Abel noted that this approach has been a cornerstone of the company since Warren Buffett took control decades ago.
The annual meeting marked another year without Buffett's longtime partner Charlie Munger, who passed away in 2023. Abel has gradually taken on more public responsibilities, and shareholders seemed comfortable with his steady leadership style. He avoided making bold predictions about the economy or stock market, instead stressing that Berkshire's portfolio of insurance, railroad, energy, and manufacturing firms gives it a durable advantage.
When asked about succession planning beyond his own role, Abel said the company has a deep bench of talent. He mentioned that Berkshire does not need to change its culture or strategy to thrive. The tone of the meeting was confident but not flashy, matching the company's reputation for understated competence.
