When Lip-Bu Tan took over as chief executive of Intel in March 2025, the company was fighting for its survival. Years of missteps, lost market share to rivals like AMD and Nvidia, and a failed attempt to break into the mobile chip market had left the once-dominant semiconductor giant on the ropes. Its manufacturing division, once the envy of the industry, had fallen behind in process technology, forcing Intel to rely on outside foundries for some of its own chips. The stock had cratered, and layoffs had become routine.
But a twist in the artificial intelligence race may now offer Intel an unexpected path to recovery. While the company missed the first wave of AI boom that fueled Nvidia's rise, the demand for AI processing is shifting. The next phase requires not just specialized graphics cards but powerful central processors that can handle a mix of reasoning, memory management, and data routing. Intel's upcoming server chips, built on its new 18A process node, are designed specifically for this hybrid workload. Early benchmarks suggest they could compete directly with offerings from established AI chipmakers.
Tan has bet the company's future on this manufacturing comeback. He has streamlined operations, cut non-core businesses, and promised customers that Intel's foundry services are back on track. If the new chips deliver on their promise, Intel could reclaim a critical role in the AI supply chain. The turnaround is far from guaranteed, but for the first time in years, there is a real chance that Intel might not just survive, but thrive again.
