Microsoft was in talks to lease $3 billion in Oracle compute capacity

Microsoft was in active discussions to lease roughly three billion dollars worth of cloud computing capacity from Oracle, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The potential deal would have seen Microsoft tap into Oracle's data center infrastructure to support its growing artificial intelligence workloads. However, the talks have since stalled and are not expected to move forward.

The breakdown reportedly stems from disagreements over security protocols and compliance requirements. Microsoft's internal teams raised red flags about how Oracle's cloud environment would integrate with existing Microsoft systems, particularly around data sovereignty and encryption standards. Sources say the two companies could not align on the operational controls needed to meet Microsoft's strict enterprise compliance policies.

This is not the first time the two tech giants have explored a deeper partnership. Earlier this year, Microsoft and Oracle announced a direct interconnection between their cloud platforms to improve performance for joint customers. But a multi-billion dollar lease of raw compute capacity represents a much tighter integration, one that carries higher risk for both parties.

For Oracle, losing this deal means missing out on a major revenue stream that could have helped it compete more aggressively against Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. For Microsoft, the collapse forces the company to continue relying on its own Azure infrastructure and existing partnerships with other providers to meet the explosive demand for AI computing power. Neither company has issued a public statement on the matter.
