Flower shops across the metro are working overtime this week as Mother's Day orders flood in, but the seasonal rush comes with a financial squeeze. Business owners report a noticeable uptick in sales compared to last year, driven by families eager to celebrate in person after years of pandemic restrictions. However, the joy of full order books is tempered by steep increases in fuel prices and delivery expenses.
Several shop owners say they have absorbed some of the higher costs to keep prices reasonable for customers, but margins are thinner than usual. One florist noted that a bouquet that cost her 15 percent more to assemble this spring now requires an additional delivery fee just to break even. Many shops have added small surcharges for same-day or long-distance deliveries, though most customers seem willing to pay extra to ensure their gifts arrive on time.
The demand is especially high for classic arrangements like roses, lilies, and mixed spring bouquets. Some shops have also seen a surge in orders for potted plants and gift baskets, as shoppers look for longer-lasting alternatives. Despite the logistical headaches, florists say the holiday remains their most important sales period of the year, and they are grateful for the steady stream of customers. For now, the focus is on getting every order out the door before Sunday, even if it means working late and spending more on gas.
