Business owners along the 50th and France corridor in Minneapolis are sharing mixed reactions to the launch of the new Metro Transit E Line, a bus rapid transit route that began service this week. The line replaces the former Route 6 and promises faster, more frequent service between downtown Minneapolis and the Southdale Transit Center in Edina. But for some shopkeepers and restaurateurs, the changes bring both hope and frustration.
Several owners at the 50th and France intersection told reporters that construction delays and altered traffic patterns have already hurt foot traffic over the past year. One boutique owner said the prolonged work made it harder for customers to park and access stores, leading to a noticeable drop in sales. Another restaurant manager expressed concern that the new bus-only lanes could further reduce on-street parking, which is already limited in the busy shopping district.
However, not all feedback is negative. Some business owners see the E Line as a potential boost, bringing more visitors from outside the neighborhood without requiring a car. A coffee shop owner noted that the improved transit could attract commuters who might stop in for a quick meal or shopping trip. Metro Transit officials have emphasized that the line is designed to support local economies by making the area more accessible.
The E Line runs every 10 minutes during peak hours and includes stations with real-time arrival displays. While the city hopes it will ease congestion and reduce emissions, the immediate impact on small businesses remains uncertain. Owners say they will need time to adjust and hope the city provides additional support, such as temporary parking relief or promotional campaigns, to help them weather the transition.
