Palm Beach County businesses collect supplies for earthquake victims in Colombia

Local companies across Palm Beach County have mobilized to collect essential supplies for the victims of the recent earthquake that struck Colombia. The effort, led by a coalition of small business owners and community leaders, aims to fill a cargo container with critical items before it is shipped to the affected regions.

Organizers say the response has been overwhelming since the drive began earlier this week. Drop-off locations have been set up at several participating storefronts, where volunteers are sorting through donations of non-perishable food, bottled water, medical supplies, blankets, and hygiene products. Many businesses have also pledged to match employee donations or contribute a portion of their daily sales to the cause.

The earthquake, which hit a rural area southwest of Bogota, has left thousands of families without shelter or access to clean water. Local relief groups in Colombia have specifically requested items like portable flashlights, first aid kits, and children's clothing, which are currently in short supply.

One of the drive's coordinators, a restaurant owner in West Palm Beach, said the effort was personal for many in the community who have family ties to the country. "We saw the news and knew we had to act immediately. This is about neighbors helping neighbors, even if they are thousands of miles away," he said.

The collection will remain open through the end of the month. After that, the supplies will be transported to a Miami port for shipment. Community members who cannot drop off items are encouraged to contact participating businesses about monetary donations, which will be used to cover freight costs and purchase additional supplies in bulk.
