Prosecutors: Colorado medical transportation businesses invoiced Medicaid for family trips, dead person

Federal prosecutors have unsealed indictments against two Colorado medical transportation business owners, alleging they orchestrated schemes to defraud Medicaid of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The charges detail brazen misuse of funds intended for vulnerable patients.

In one case, a Lakewood woman is accused of submitting false claims for non-existent ambulance services. Shockingly, the indictment alleges she invoiced Medicaid for transporting a patient who was already deceased at the time of the purported trips. In a separate case, a Colorado Springs man faces charges for allegedly using his medical transport company as a personal slush fund. Prosecutors state he billed Medicaid for luxury family vacations to Disneyland and various beach resorts, disguising them as legitimate patient transports.

Medicaid, a joint federal and state program, provides essential health coverage for low-income individuals. The alleged fraud diverted critical resources meant for patient care. Both defendants are charged with health care fraud and face significant penalties if convicted. The investigations highlight ongoing efforts to combat fraud and protect taxpayer-funded programs essential for public health.
