Small business consultant Gene Marks recently shared his perspective on the shifting job landscape for recent college graduates, tying it to President Donald Trump's praise for small businesses following the April 2026 jobs report. Marks argues that while artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the workforce, it is not eliminating opportunities for new grads. Instead, it is redirecting them toward roles that require human judgment and physical presence.
According to Marks, the most promising positions for young workers today are those that AI cannot easily replicate. He specifically points to field managers and service technicians as "AI-proof" careers. These roles demand on-site problem solving, interpersonal communication, and hands-on technical skills. A field manager, for example, must coordinate teams in real time, handle unexpected issues, and build relationships with clients. A service technician needs to diagnose mechanical problems, interact with customers, and adapt to changing conditions. These tasks rely on situational awareness and empathy, qualities that current AI systems lack.
Marks also notes that the April jobs report showed strong hiring in sectors like construction, logistics, and maintenance. He believes this trend will continue as businesses invest in physical infrastructure and service delivery. For new graduates, the advice is clear: focus on developing practical skills and a willingness to work in the field rather than chasing purely digital or analytical roles. The future of entry-level hiring, he suggests, belongs to those who can do what machines cannot.
