Thieves are breaking through drywall to burglarize Chicago businesses, police warn

Chicago police have issued a warning to business owners about a new and unusual burglary method. Thieves are reportedly cutting through drywall to gain entry into commercial buildings. The department released a community alert on Thursday after a string of break-ins where the suspects bypassed traditional locks and alarms by simply punching or cutting holes in the interior walls.

According to the alert, the burglars target adjoining spaces, often entering a vacant unit or a common area first. From there, they cut a hole through the drywall into the neighboring business. Once inside, they steal cash, electronics, and other valuables before escaping through the same hole. Police say the method is quiet and allows the criminals to avoid triggering door or window sensors.

The affected businesses are located across several neighborhoods on the city's North and West sides. Authorities have not released a specific description of the suspects but believe multiple people may be involved. They are urging shop owners to reinforce interior walls with metal mesh or plywood and to install motion sensors inside their stores. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chicago Police Department's burglary unit.
