Winter Garden city commissioners have officially approved a contract with Retail Strategies Inc., a consulting firm specializing in commercial district revitalization, to provide direct assistance to small businesses affected by recent lease non-renewals along Plant Street. The decision, reached during a regular commission meeting, aims to mitigate the economic disruption caused when multiple tenants received notices that their leases would not be renewed, forcing them to relocate or close their doors.
The move comes as several long-standing local shops, restaurants, and service providers face an uncertain future due to property owners opting not to extend leases, often in favor of larger national chains or redevelopment projects. Retail Strategies Inc. will work closely with displaced business owners to identify alternative locations within Winter Garden, negotiate favorable lease terms, and provide guidance on relocation logistics, marketing support, and financial planning. The firm’s expertise in downtown revitalization and small business retention is expected to help preserve the unique character of Plant Street, a historic corridor that has become a hub for independent retailers and eateries.
City officials emphasized that the initiative is not only about saving individual businesses but also about maintaining the economic vitality and community identity of the downtown area. “We understand that these lease non-renewals create significant hardship for our local entrepreneurs, who are the backbone of our city’s charm and economy,” a city spokesperson stated. “By partnering with Retail Strategies Inc., we are taking proactive steps to ensure that these businesses have the resources and support they need to find new homes and continue serving our residents and visitors.”
The contract includes an initial assessment phase, during which the firm will evaluate the specific needs of each affected business and develop customized relocation plans. Ongoing support will be provided through the end of the year, with the possibility of extension based on progress. Local business owners have expressed cautious optimism about the initiative, noting that while the process of moving is daunting, the city’s commitment to helping them stay in Winter Garden is a welcome lifeline. The first consultations are expected to begin within the coming weeks.
