Business Lunch Meets Convenience as New Onigiri Shop Opens Downtown

Business Lunch Meets Convenience as New Onigiri Shop Opens Downtown

The lunch rush took on a new flavor in Downtown Los Angeles this week as Onigiri Sun, a specialty shop dedicated to the classic Japanese rice ball, opened its doors to a crowd that stretched around the block. Located inside CAL Marketplace, the new spot drew a steady stream of customers on July 24, many of them office workers looking for a quick and satisfying alternative to the usual sandwich or salad.

The menu focuses on a variety of onigiri, the familiar seaweed-wrapped triangles stuffed with everything from salted salmon and pickled plum to spicy tuna and seasoned vegetables. For many Japanese natives and longtime fans of the food, the appeal is the balance of simplicity and portability. For newcomers, it is a chance to grab something filling without sitting down for a full meal.

The opening comes at a time when downtown foot traffic has been slowly recovering, and the demand for fast, casual, and affordable options is higher than ever. Onigiri Sun seems to have tapped into that need right away, with lines moving steadily but never thinning out during the peak lunch hour. The shop also offers a few side items and drinks, but the rice balls are clearly the main attraction.

The owners said they wanted to bring the comfort of a Japanese convenience store staple to a wider audience, but with a fresher, made-to-order approach. Early reviews from customers in line praised the texture of the rice and the generous fillings. Whether it becomes a permanent fixture in the downtown dining scene remains to be seen, but the first day suggested there is plenty of appetite for it.
