My kids thrived at their private outdoor elementary school, where learning took place in small groups amidst nature. The unconventional setting provided them with a unique educational experience that emphasized hands-on learning and exploration. They enjoyed the freedom to engage with their environment, fostering a deep appreciation for the outdoors. However, the absence of traditional subjects like art, music, and library time meant they missed out on certain creative and cultural experiences.
Despite these gaps, my children flourished in this alternative learning environment, developing strong social skills and a love for nature. As they transitioned to public school, they faced challenges adjusting to a more structured and conventional classroom setting. The shift from outdoor learning to a traditional curriculum was significant, requiring them to adapt to new expectations and social dynamics. While they cherished their time in the outdoor school, the journey of adjustment highlighted the importance of a well-rounded education that includes both experiential learning and creative subjects.
