Ormond-by-the-Sea restaurant says A1A construction is hurting business

A restaurant along the scenic A1A corridor in Volusia County is speaking out about what it calls a serious blow to its bottom line, saying that months of construction have turned its once-busy parking lot into a frustrating maze for diners. The owners of the Ormond-by-the-Sea establishment claim that the ongoing road project has eliminated a significant number of parking spaces directly in front of their business, forcing regulars and newcomers alike to park blocks away or simply give up and go elsewhere.

The restaurant says the disruption, which includes narrowed lanes, temporary barriers, and shifting detours, has cut foot traffic by a noticeable margin. Staff report that lunch and dinner rushes have slowed, and some longtime customers have told them they avoid the area entirely until the work is finished. The owner described the situation as a survival issue, noting that every lost table adds up when margins are already thin.

Florida Department of Transportation officials, however, defend the project, explaining that the changes are part of a broader effort to improve safety along the coastal highway. They point to the addition of dedicated turn lanes, better crosswalks, and improved sight lines for drivers as necessary upgrades, even if they cause short-term inconvenience. The agency says it has tried to minimize impacts by scheduling work during off-peak hours, but acknowledges that some disruption is unavoidable on a busy two-lane road.

The restaurant is now asking for clearer signage directing customers to alternative parking and for a faster construction timeline. Meanwhile, local residents remain split, with some voicing support for the business and others welcoming the promised safety improvements. The project is expected to continue for several more months, leaving the restaurant to hope that patience pays off before the summer tourist season fades.
